So for a change, I decided to go out with 5 other IRL buddies and watch the Joker movie. I was anticipating this one was gonna be good since I saw the Rotten Tomatoes critics go reviewbomb this movie while the audience fucking loved it. Along with the premiere day earnings of the movie (13.3 million!), I came up with a ton of optimism for this movie, I was hoping I could watch it to the chant of “gamers rise up” like the memer I was, and maybe the lack of military dudes, policemen or incel memers was about to disappoint me for a bit, but the movie didn’t disappoint my optimism, not even a tiny bit.
Joker, in case you’re not up to date on this sort of DC jiggamagoo, tells the story of the homonymous Batman villain and his descent to insanity, on his road to become the clown prince of crime. Starring Joaquin Phoenix, which I’m not a tad bit familiar with his past filmography, but I know he’s had a bit of a childhood trauma with a cult called Children of God. However, I don’t think this review deserves tinfoil hats to be worn, so that’s all I’m going to say about the guy’s conspiracy theories.
But I have to say Joaquin Phoenix, in the act of his role as Arthur Fleck or Joker, manages to pull it perfectly and flawlessly his role as he does act a mentally ill person really well. The mental illness interpretated by Phoenix looks very credible in his broken voice, the forced, yet pathological Joker laughter looks like a real mental condition, and he makes it so incredibly believable.
The cinematography neither disappoints, sometimes it makes it clear that Joker here is an insignificant human being with their own camera angles, then makes it so he comes imposing, menacing, and then the movie feels like, appropriately, has been filmed like a comedy stand-up show, which is very fitting of the main character’s personality. We could even see the traces of his own insanity slipping through the cinematography and the cuts.
I have to say, without a shadow of a doubt, that, as a comedian (if I can call myself one), I find Joaquin Phoenix’ character incredibly relatable. I do not obviously condone committing serious criminal offenses, but I do know that the world and the society around Arthur or Joker has made him into this downward spiral of insanity that made him commit whatever he did. In contrast, I got banned off of multiple platforms, seriously affecting my mental health to a certain degree. Joker might not be a white supremacist or an incel warrior, but he is, like many of us, the result of a complete clown world that drives us even more insane.
I have to recommend watching Joker. The movie is completely brilliant, and even coming from a Hollywood jew company like Warner Bros. and DC, I am very grateful that for once a good, really good movie like this came out, despite the setbacks. It’s a movie that made me smile.
